According to the Evening Standard, both parties are reportedly still negotiating about a number of details including the wage package, potential add-ons and bonuses. Real Madrid are cautious about upsetting the wage structure in their squad and therefore do not want to exceed their wage budget.
Furthermore, PSG are keen on extracting as much value from the transfer deal as they can and this is another factor which is hindering progress. They could either ask for a significant fee or insist that Madrid pay a significant portion of Mbappe’s wage.
However, the transfer market in Europe has significantly changed due to the financial implications of the pandemic and both clubs have suffered major revenue losses. Therefore, it remains uncertain how much Madrid are willing to spend in order to secure their desired player.
Mbappe’s contract with PSG ends next year, which means that the French club is under pressure to sell him this summer or risk losing him on a free transfer next year.
A solution needs to be found before the transfer window shuts, or Mbappe could end up staying at PSG for another year, but with his departure looming, it is far from ideal for the French club.
